Atlanta Pauses Scooter Permits After Deaths

The city had come under pressure from activists in recent days who had protested on Atlanta's streets after a man riding a scooter was run over by a city transit bus. The executive order from Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms stops short of removing scooters from the city's streets.

"Across the nation, municipalities are dealing with the sudden and unforeseen impact these devices have had on our communities," Bottoms said in a press release. "While some municipalities have banned the devices altogether, the City of Atlanta acted in good faith to work with the private sector to explore innovative solutions to ease existing commuting strains," said Bottoms. "However, as Atlanta has seen two scooter related deaths, this complex issue requires a more thorough and robust dialogue."

I travel pretty often for work and these scooters are a freaking mess in every major city that I've been to. Scooters all over the place, laying down on the sidewalk, in bushes, hanging off the curb into the street, etc and there have been deaths in multiple cities. I'm all for easier/greener ways to get around, but they should maintain these in a better manner. At the very least, they should be like the bicycle programs where there are specific racks throughout the city where they must be returned.

The scooters in San Diego are a public hazard. I know car emissions have negative environmental impact but so do tourists on scooters.

The larger issue here is the statist over reach that are publicly owned streets. You don't see scooter accidents on privately owned streets because the market doesn't allow it.

Riding these scooters in a car city like ATL is dangerous as hell. I could see them working in more walk able Northeastern Cities.

People ride them with no regard for themselves in Atlanta. Certain sections of town I’ve seen and could hit people that ride them through cross-walks at top speed well after pedestrians have crossed. In some cases there is no way someone making a legal right or left turn through that side walk can see them.

People are idiots sometimes

They would work if people knew how to ride them. The cities hate them because they don’t get paid off of them. As soon as all these cities figure out how to get their cut they won’t care as much. Charlotte is still figuring it out and some of the city council seem mad about it but I bet the noise dies down if they get paid. I think transit and other services suffer more because of these scooters and they want to do what they can to change it.

on a sidenote, in many places in canada you get can get a $600 fine if you give the middle finger to someone while driving.
Reason being it can cause the beginnings of road rage
