We're so far behind on networking. Before covid, I spent many years doing the local Big Brother Big Sister program where you go to a school and talk about your job, what you majored in, and then work with kids on a project (like building a computer for instance). I'd show up at these inner city schools and would always be the only black man, and often the only black person. Lots of white men and women. I would never knock them, and I appreciate them taking their time to talk to a bunch of black kids but...we need more of US doing this.

Just having a black man talk to kids about their job can expand their mind. And even for adults...being able to talk to a tradesman about what it took to get your HVAC license, become an electrician, etc. Lot of jobs out here paying a LOT of money, and there are networks of white and (especially) Hispanic dudes who run it. We need more black people in those spaces, building their own networks. So this is a two pronged fight. It's not just about telling kids how to go to college, because not all kids are gonna go. We also gotta tell them about trades, state jobs, etc.

one thing i've learned in recent years is that a lot of people on social media organize "power" brunches or meet ups whatever....especially woman empowerment events but the vast majority are just money grabs

they just get people to spend x amount for a brunch and listen to a panel whom they don't even pay....

that and they do "influencer" mixers but the organizers don't have a crazy following but they invite everyone else with a big following to get some of their followers.,.

it's all a money /power grab....

there are some genuine ones out there and most of the time they are free or whatever just don't fall for it

I did BBBS a few years ago. Was doing the one on one thing with a young 4th grade brotha.
I aint really know exactly what to do so I'd go up there and throw the football and hoop with him cause thats what he was interestedin when I asked him:manny:
Then one day I went and talked to a BBBS supervisor and they were like man you sposed to be helping him with his grades :russ:
So then we went to the library and played educational computer games

I think you need more black businesses first. I volunteered for these big brother programs before and it was hard to make a difference. A bunch of these kids wouldn't even make it through the school year because of their parents financial situation. And they would be forced to move in the middle of the year never to be seen again. shyt was beyond sad because you weren't allowed to keep in touch.

95% of humans are utterly useless in the context of building. Those who have the capabilities are actually making moves, and typically you come across them when you make moves yourself. All that 'what ima be when I grow up' brunch and vision board stuff is just to keep people busy before they die living the normal mediocre lives they were destined for. Nothing wrong with being avg, but society paints the picture that everyone is supposed to be a boss, and if you aren't you are a failure. If everyone was a boss then there would be no economy lol.

Black men are better off meeting folks via hobbies vs these "lets get black men together and have a power brunch" BS events, because every black man has his own perspective on the world and assuming we all have the same is idiotic and only setting dudes up to be let down.
