Looks matter to a degree, but not as much as some dudes would like to allege. I've seen way more dudes with cache and money(perceived or not) with super attractive chicks than I've seen handsome, broke dudes with super attractive chicks.
Just like some dudes want to say that ugly dudes want to push the OP's line, I feel that alot of "attractive/in shape" dudes want to push the line that looks overcome all. In fact, I would say that dudes who focus more on their six pack more than their personality tend to end up with less attractive chicks in comparison to guys who maybe skip the gym but are charismatic, have a cool lifestyle and are focused on their paper.
When I think over all the dudes I know who've gotten the most out of chicks-clothes, cars, vacations, money, etc.-none of them were ripped or were male models per se. Some may have been more naturally attractive than others, but that wasn't what drew the women in and had them doing the most. All the dudes were funny, charismatic and had a cold mouthpiece.
Looks can help, but looks won't win you the game.
