Its true though, Austin wasn't the same type of heel when he came in. Its like he was trying to hard to be an a$$hole, a big piece of shyt. Just too much over the top stuff to be taken seriously and he was already established in the fan's eyes a anti-hero face icon.. now if you want to talk about comedy, Austin Heel at this point was on some GOAT shyt right there.

I can go on but dam dude was on some other shyt breh as a comedy heel. I think he was the shyt, honestly. The problem is he didn't have that connection with the crowd that Heel Hogan and Rock did. Some were laughing, others cheering and a portion of em was just neutrally not giving a fukk.

the recent heel character wasnt supposed to be rehash of the initial heel run. name a heel run that was duplicated by a wrestler years later? doesn't happen. character evolved and it was a different type of heel. the rock's heel runs weren't all the same either, flawed logic.

austin was the GOAT face ever, that it was hard for the fans to accept his new heel run, yet he still got the crowd against him. he had to be over the top, there was no other option at that point.

His heel run was fine, its was when he turned back is when the problems started. Awful matches, sheriff austin, disastrous program with Hall, fading popularity...and eventually he ran out on the company, instead of doing a job, and was buried because of it.

I actually agree with most of this. While Austin is one of the GOATS, anybody who says that his popularity didn't started fading in the latter half of 1'-02' compared to 97'-99' is in denial. I agree that the dozens of comebacks as sheriff, co-gm and all that bullshyt was more than anything he did as a heel in 01', and it watered down his "bad ass persona" to a certain extent. At one point, that shyt he was doing with Bischoff in 03' was like

Austin HIMSELF said he if he could he wouldn't have done the heel run again, it didn't work. Also it made no sense why did Austin join Vince after 5 years of hating him? Why did Vince help Austin win the title after doing everything in his power to keep the belt from him? They never explained this. They made the bad-ass Austin character so soft it was a complete 180 and his face character was never the same after this. Him joining the Alliance was even dumber.

Total Willy Mays with the mets period, and yes it does affect his standing with the all time greats.

I believe the biggest mistake was turning Austin RIGHT BACK heel when they teased the fact that the "Old Stone Cold" was back. The pop he received was MASSIVE when he came back and stunned all the Alliance members. Its when they turned him back heel in Invasion is where things became real silly.

It would have made more sense for The Rock to return and lead WCW/ECW. He had more of a reason to want to put the WWF out of business being that Austin, Vince, and Triple H left him lying in a pool of his own blood in that cage match.
