I been typing this up for a minute.. I anticipate serious replies for a more cordial experience in this thread.
So many times we've foamed at the mouth when the release of an anticipated game is close. We salivate over simple gifs, scour the internet for info that may come from leaks and analyze pertinent data day in and day out. We tell other people this game, THIS ONE will be THE game that solidifies and justifies the console or platform you're vested into.
I hardly can remember very few games that truly met the hype. Most games imo that were amazing to me and blew me away were games I was NOT hyped about at all. Almost every game that I was hyped about didn't meet my expectations..
Examples of games that didn't meet my expectations after new game newness worn off:
Uncharted 3- It's like yea i poured hella hours into this one title online but that was because I had a bunch of friends online to play with. It was fun just talking shyt online with them while playing the game but the game itself was disappointing to Uncharted standards coming from pt 2. I only beat story mode like twice and I couldn't be bothered to finish it again. UC2 I platinumed and played MP religiously for fun regardless of who was online. That game was truly "fun" imo.
Killzone Shadowfall-
More like Killzone:Boring Fall. shyttiest Killzone imo. Graphics looked nice but it was a chore to play. I admit that, shyt was wack to me. MP was just meh. I had more fun with KZ2 and even 3.
Playstation All Stars Battle Royale- I'm a SSB fanboy and simultaneously a fan of Sony's first party offerings A game like SSB from Sony??
count me in... or out... It was fun at first but the presentation, lack of content and questionable kill system turned me off. Game lasted me like 5-6 months.
Knack- I get the scores. It's 5.5/10 imo. It's okay but can use some more time in the oven.
GTA V-MP- SP was alright but MP was wack. I touched on this in the other thread about GTA V.

Now for games that just blew me away. Most of these were games that came to me out the blue and I had no prior knowledge of besides a passing glimpse of it once.
Persona 4 Golden What can I say, this had to be one of the greatest RPG games I've ever played. To date, I've clocked more than 100 hours into that game. 67 hours on Persona 4 golden and 40 hours on the PS2 version. I love damn near everything about the game.
Those melodies, those characters, the setting, the ambiance and the story
.
Uncharted 2- Funny enough I hated Uncharted at first sight. i was a xbot back in 2007-2010 since Halo was the shyt. I saw UC1 and thought it was terrible. Finally in 2010 i copped a PS3 since my 360 was gone and I loved UC1 when I played it. Played UC2 and was blown the fukk away. I had no idea how good the game would be. I literally put the game as my favorite game series ever since.
The chemistry between the characers was so real. Whenever a scene was playing out, it felt like I was literally watching a movie unfold except I can play it. The set pieces were
TLOU
Game actually met the hype imo. Story was incredible. Game was intense as fukk. Graphics was beautiful. I usually don't get amazed by games I hyped up but this one truly shone. MP was surprisingly good too. I didn't put as much hours into this as UC2 but the experience was paramount to the enjoyment I got out of Uc2.
Zero Escape: 9 hours, 9 persons, 9 doors- I played this title randomly after trying out the sequel on the Vita from PS+. I briefly played it and thought it was "okayish" but never really got into it. Well I finally one day put some more time into VLR and thought it was dope and the premise was kind of unique. Fast forward a month later and I done burned through 999 multiple times, got the true ending and that was through a smartphone Nintendo DS emulator. This game literally has the best writing and best story in a game by far. The quality of the story and the way it was presented is unrivaled. This shyt has suspense, twists, characters that are deeper than they seem at first glance. Puzzles were actually fukking hard and weren't your ordinary run of the mill legend of zelda puzzle.
So many parallels to interesting theories and philosophies(Ship of Theseus, Schrodingers Cat, human conciousness) that it felt much more mature than these pow pow shoot em ups people are so inundated with these days. Also the writing..
There were several moments where the writing was so poignant that it moved me just as much as a blockbuster cinematic would. It made me so much more appreciative of good writing in a story. The sequel Zero Escape:Virtues Last Reward for the DS/Vita is just as good.
Bayonetta: I played the demo out the blue on 360 about 4 years ago and wow wow wow. The gameplay was fukking fresh and incredible. The main character looked hot and she was kicking ass
. My favorite hack and slash game. To me this game>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>MGR, DmC, Ninja Gaiden @GoldenGlove sorry.
Smash Bros Melee
Dat Intro!!! I was GEEKED for this shyt and it actually ended up being one my most played games ever. I played this shyt for years.
Legend of Zelda:Ocarina of Time
I had to be 8 years old when this came out. I didn't even know much about Zelda but something about this game was straight up piff. I never even beat the game and said it was one of the greatest games of all time at that time.
There's more but that's the most I can think of right now.
TL;DR Don't believe the hype. Try out games that you might scoff at or think isn't worth your time. They're usually much better than they seem to be vs games that you hype yourself over for months at a time and end up being disappointed. This leads to many gamers saying games are no longer good or w/e. That's nonsense, I think there's still plenty of good games, they're just overshadowed by modern blockbuster dudebro games.
