The tap water in NYC is very clean and is recognized as some of the best tap in the country, it doesn't taste funny and comes out pretty clear. NYC's tap water comes from the mountains upstate and the city regularly monitors bacteria in the water.

Michigan has really good tap water (advantage of being surrounded by lakes, I guess) so I've never had any issue drinking it.

But even it didn't, I'd just buy a filter. I wish I would waste money on bottled water.

Tap water makes my throat feel tight or knotted in it when I swallow.
I only drink bottled water.
I prefer to drink Fiji because I like the way that the bottle looks.
