I did 23andme and then sent my results to a specialist: Dr. J Douglas McDonald.

He sent me my detailed results:

81% West African (Yoruba)
17% English
2% Native American

Actually it's my maternal side that's Yoruba. Specifically my maternal haplogroup is L3b1a. Paternal Haplogroup: R1b1b2a1a.

You need to talk to your antecedants first; mother, father, aunts, uncles, cousins of your parents, grandparents. Try to get dates of your grandparents births, and locations. Then you need to work backwards one generation at a time, and one branch of the tree at a time. You can use Genealogy, Family Trees & Family History Records at Ancestry.com to search U.S. census records, and military draft/enlistment records. Its a paid site, but libraries usually have free access to it. Its a databse, all you have to do is type in the name of your grandparent, around what year they were born, and you should get a hit. Once you find out your grandparents in the census, that should tell you who their parents were. Henry Louis Gates did a series called African American Lives that traced the genealogies of a lot of black entertainers/notables. The tools he used are applicable to all genealogy searches. You should also seek out any family bibles your parents, or grandparents may have. A lot of older black generations put genealogical information inside their bibles.
