Above the fray.
He's right that he never lost the belt.
Iron sheikh camel clutched him but he refused to give up, his manager threw in the towel.

WWF had to get boring Bob backline out of the way to set up Hulk Hogan vs Iron Sheikh for the belt.

Backlund coming back as a loon is one one the most unpredictable twists in wrestling history.

The accidental deep storytelling of clean cut babyface champion Bob Backlund being pushed aside for the newer, more charismatic model with a controversial title change causing him to snap and turn into a crazy bitter heel to get his title back and feud with Bret Hart.....only for Bret Hart to lose the title in a controversial fashion (spur of the moment sudden death overtime that wasn't part of the match rules) to be pushed aside for the newer, more charismatic model, causing him to snap and turn into a crazy bitter heel to get his title back and feud with Steve Austin....only for Steve Austin to never really lose the title (lost it in a triple threat not being the one pinned) and eventually snapping and turning into a crazy bitter heel to get his title back

It's almost as if the actual top heel of WWE is Vince McMahon and everyone else, no matter how big a star, is simply a pawn to be manipulated. :ohhh:

a masterpiece:wow:

I didn't really appreciate it when I was young, but what a great character Mr. Backlund was (as much as it really WAS a character, as opposed to Backlund just being himself on camera). I think a lot about what he would have looked like if he had a long-term run in the Attitude era (could have been Right to Censor done correctly) or even in the present-day political climate (Backlund as a deranged combination of your average older white New England conservative and Jordan Peterson minus the probable coke addiction would be an instant mega heel in 2020). To this day, I believe they should have let Bob have a little run with the belt; they could have had Nash squash him at the Royal Rumble as opposed to 2 days later or whatever it was. Might have even worked out better for Nash in the long run.
