Oh yeah...it's been a powder keg that started in the late 90s.
All the poor white artists that were living in the lower east side of manhattan back then started moving down to Williamsburg and driving up prices when they eventually got priced out. Then it was the gays...then everybody else followed suit.

The act of gentrification, has been happening since people started living in cities.
Gentrification as we know it, is only is a problem when whites displace poor blacks and latinos.
But when blacks and latinos gentrify, we don't talk about it...we don't praise it.. we overlook it.

Out of fear, racial and economical, when blacks moved in the property value "magically" would go down, and lack of basic amenities (education,safety,etc) would go up. I hate to burst yo bubble breh...but by definition blacks and Latinos cannot be described or assigned as gentrifiers. Simply because they are not a gentry class. To be a gentry class you have to have generational wealth, assets, trust funds, population, numbers, etc...Black and Spanish people cannot do this and don't have these resources nor do they own the property en mass they stay in hence the reason they are getting kicked out and pushed out so easily.
Whites are the premier gentry class. Stop.

if you don't understand the racial underpinnings of white gentrification in american cities and its disregard for the existing culture in conjunction with its economic ramifications, then don't speak on it.
Actually, this is not exactly correct. The problem is that you are looking at one of the largest cities in the world in where it will be extremely difficult for minorities to take control of an area.
Many hispanics have made their own neighborhoods in small to mid sized cities. I have had this conversation with many many people before and the mindset so many people in NYC have is completely backwards. Most minorities in NYC do not OWN, they LIVE there, but they don't OWN. Once the interests shift, it's all going to the highest bidder and one can't really blame the landowners trying to capitalize.

@smokeurobinson it is literally impossible to ignore the racial undercurrent behind gentrification. Literally. White people in America control all the businesses, the economy, the money, etc. Might as well call it racial displacement or whitewashing. These neighborhoods seem to be becoming more diverse but they are actually becoming less diverse and more white and the changes in the neighborhood reflect it...more cops, more corporate retailers that would be easily found in flyoverland usa, etc.
