Probably in my top 10 of all time, I didn't hear it it's entirety for awhile though. I probably bought it around 2000 or so. Defines 1995 sound in rap, that east coast feel.

I'm trying to think of the first AZ song I heard. I was too young for his 1995 run, but somewhere around 1998 or 1999 I has at least heard a verse or a song, I am sure from Nas tracks. Born in 1985, I really had to run down the classics in my early teens.

I probably listen to Doe or Die more, the production just edged slightly towards the defining Bad Boy/glossy style production. The same way I prefer It Was Written also, to Illmatic. Tracks like "Mo Money Mo Murder Mo Homicide" are just perfect production wise, and Sugar Hill is clearly a "Big Poppa" influenced track. It fits me better than many of the beats on Illmatic, the mafioso touch is so necessary.

I remember when this came out some of my boys were disappointed with it but I’ve always felt Doe or Die was borderline classic. The only song I don’t really like is We Can’t Win. Rather Unique is probably a top 10 all time song for me and AZ is in my personal top 5

My people felt the same way... Guess it’s impossible to live up to the hype from that Illmatic verse... always thought this album needed like three more tracks tho.
