Didn't potatoes save the Irish from starving after a famine or something? Tradition carries on today I suppose considering it's a cheap food and filling. Plus you can get creative with it.

Irish love potatoes like Haitians love rice

Some type of soil fungus spreading through the country caused damage to the potatoes...the poor were so dependent on potatoes for survival that they starved when it happened..... England stood by and let them all die.

Interesting, it's been a while since I read that story. The word "blight" comes to mind for some reason. I didn't know England let them starve. People man..sheesh.

In my broke days there used to be a pizza spot near me that had kind of a secret menu with all types of loaded baked potatoes. They had ones stuffed with broccoli, chicken and cheese or sour cream + chives or bacon, cheddar and ranch, etc. Big ass russets too, they didn't skimp. The shyt was a whole meal and then some for like $2.25

And when I was damn near living in poverty after tuition and shyt had been paid I stayed keeping a 5lb bag of potatoes in the house. A baked potato with a little butter and salt is a filling meal on its own when you don't have shyt else.

You already know.
I picked up some good spending/saving habits from those days that I still follow.
I can't justify spending a lot of money on a meal and I rarely throw food out.

Dude in the thread already mentioned sweet potatoes, and I'd like to recommend Yuca as an alternative.

Not as easy to prepare as potatoes, but inexpensive and very filling.
