All four of Baltimore’s Confederate statues were removed overnight, just days after a white nationalist rally erupted into chaos and violence in Charlottesville, Virginia.

The Baltimore City Council voted unanimously Monday night to immediately take down the monuments after more than a year of indecision.

City crews began the removal process at 11:30 p.m. Tuesday and finished around 5:30 a.m. Wednesday, according to The Baltimore Sun. Hours earlier, President Donald Trump had defended the white nationalist demonstrators who gathered in Virginia this weekend, ostensibly to protest the removal of a Confederate statue.

It’s unclear where the monuments will be placed permanently. Pugh has suggested they could end up in a Confederate cemetery, reported CBS affiliate WJZ-13.

Sen. Chris Van Hollen (D-Md.) praised the city for taking down the monuments.

Several cities are now reportedly considering removing their own Confederate monuments following Saturday’s deadly clashes in Charlottesville, including Memphis, Tennessee; Lexington, Kentucky; Jacksonville, Florida; and Washington, D.C.

The Hollywood Forever Cemetery, one of the oldest cemeteries in Los Angeles, announced Tuesday that it plans to remove a monument honoring Confederate veterans.

Baltimore Mayor Catherine Pugh said the city moved “as quickly as we could” to get rid of the monuments.

“It’s done,” Pugh told the Sun. “They needed to come down. My concern is for the safety and security of our people.”

More than 1,000 people marched in Baltimore’s streets Sunday to demand that the city tear down its Confederate statues in the wake of Saturday’s deadly clashes in Charlottesville.

Days later, police officers kept watch as city workers dismantled the monuments. Applause and cheers can be heard in a video showing a crane loading a statue honoring Confederate Gen. Robert E. Lee onto a flatbed truck.

“The police are being cheerful and encouraging people to take photos and selfies,” Baynard Woods, the editor at large of The Baltimore City Paper, told The New York Times as he documented the statues’ removal.

All that remains in place of the four statues ― the Robert E. Lee & “Stonewall” Jackson Monument, the Confederate Soldiers and Sailors Monument, the Confederate Women’s Monument and the Roger B. Taney Monument ― are concrete bases.

A statue of a pregnant black woman carrying a child on her back and raising her fist in the air now stands at the base of the former Lee & Jackson Monument. Activists placed the figure there during protests on Sunday.

While true, let's at least start somewhere and get rid of this shyt which shouldn't have even gone up in the first place.

I'm all for taking the statues down and renaming streets named after Confederates but we need to take it for what it is and not make it anything more than that.

No doubt. Honoring traitors was ridiculous from the jump. Throw them shyts in a museum or confed graveyard.

There is power in symbolism. Dr. Welsing went into great detail about it. Destroying their symbols is the first act of warfare. Its like sending out a cannon shot to let the enemy know your on the island.

Look at the great conquerors in history. The very first thing alot of them did was to destroy monuments.

It's funny because everyone is always talking about how bad the South is with this shyt but these monuments are Nationwide. East Coast to West Coast and yet only the South gets smoke?

MD wanted to be part of the Confederacy bad but Lincoln didn't allow it. A lot of people don't realize these statues weren't erected until after Reconstruction and the implementation of Jim Crow laws

Didn't say there isn't power in symbolism but you are overstating it.

There are plenty of places in the world with no visible monuments to White nationalism and White supremacy is as palpable as ever.

Yeah I'll get back to you on that one... :francis:
Yes! It's about policies and inclusive economic prosperity. Just more symbolic gestures.

Well stated.

The fact of the matter is after they showed out in VA, that galvanized the black community in B-More with 1,000 people marching the next day. Peacefully, so they couldn't act a fool & declare a State of Emergency to try and sweep it under the rug as out of control negroes.

They spent a year trying to put this off and the racist motherfukkers are the ones that ended up tipping it over the edge. Call it karma, reaping & sowing, or whatever but it's backfired. Regardless of the motivation of the local government, they lost something else they wanted to hold onto which is a win for us.

I will never understand why people make this White Supremacist system out to be flawless or infallible, it's not. They've just given themselves a huge headstart by kneecapping anyone else so they can't capitalize on their fukk ups.

So we figure out how to turn this symbolic W into a major L for them.

Yup. These statues were erected to intimidate blacks into "knowing our place" so to speak.
