ok there's Kershaw...but hes special, dude is the best pitcher since Pedro I think. also Miggy.

but then I look at shyt like

Pujols...monster contract, underperform right away and keeps getting worse
Cain....last two years been shyt
Posey...still ok numbers for a catcher but if he cant catch it will be a disaster, already mediocre as a defensive catcher
Verlander...
Prince Batter...:why:
Howard...:mjlol:
Mauer...same as posey, but already not catching
Reyes :patrice:
Ethier :trash:
Arod :dead:

Hamilton :wtf:
Tex :wow:
BJ Upton :what:

seems like every long-term big contract already starts failing in like second or third year and by the time it expires shyt will be a snowball

@HHR particularly interested in your view on this

Trout since he signed his extension...
McCutchen...
Lee and Hamels have been pretty good...the phillies offense is just horrible, their defense isn't all that either
Carlos Gomez as long as he stays healthy

I think teams have gone overboard....but at the same time, they're doing it intentionally. They're conscious of the fact that the back end of these deals will get ugly. But they also hope/expect to get 5+ WAR seasons for $20M for the first few years....which is great value.

The teams are raking in cash, it has to go somewhere :yeshrug:

It started when teams, even smaller market teams, were able to lock up their stars before free agency....even though very few of them got any discount. I do wonder when and what the downside of the cycle will be.

Teams will probably stop locking up players for so long past free agency, but the FA contracts really aren't going to change. It's easy to say the contracts are terrible, but if they didn't sign them with their current teams, they likely had very comparable offers from multiple other teams.

ARod's first big deal deal worked out a lot. It was the extension though
A-Rod signed that first deal at 25. Like Kershaw, when that young, you're paying for someone's prime years, whereas most of these guys get their deals in the middle of their prime, right before the fall off begins. By comparison, someone like Robinson Cano signed his new deal as a 32 year old second baseman. In no way will that deal end well.

would you keep working hard if you got $100-200 mil guaranteed :mjpls:
I would be looking at houses and cars and expensive clothing all day on my laptop in the clubhouse. Batting practice? :camby:

Take extra drills in the infield :camby:

Study film on pitcher? :camby:

My money guaranteed!
