All that does is take them out of the main event picture...they were great in WCW but all it did was keep guys like Eddie Benoit and Jherico out of the main title picture and marginalized them
I don't agree. Having a cruiserweight division just makes things more realistic, while giving smaller guys a prize to go after that justifies feuds, mandates title defenses, and basically just lessens the degree to which most matches in WWE are just either random pairings with nothing at stake or hokey "storyline" driven bs.
If a cruiserweight guy comes along who is genuine Heavyweight title material, you have an instantly compelling storyline when he decides to move up in weight and challenge the heavyweights. Think Roy Jones Jr, Manny Pacquiao etc becoming muliti-weight world champs in boxing. The fact that WCW didn't do this with Eddie Guerrero doesn't mean that the concept is flawed, it means that WCW missed out on booking a great story. Imagine Eddie G clearing out the Cruiserweight division on some Mayweather shyt and then moving up to face, say Booker T for the Heavyweight title. That shyt would have been money.
The truly great cruiserweights could be like those guys, and eventually move up and conquer the heavyweight division. The rest will at least have a reason to be in matches.
It's not like a Dean Malenko was ever going to win the world title. Having a division in which he competed against guys of roughly similar stature was by far the best use of him. Instead of jobbing to guys 150lbs heavier and 12 inches taller, he got to establish himself as a "p4p king" type badass. WCW Cruiserweight champion Rey Mysterio Jr. was >>>> forced WWE Champion Rey Mysterio, IMO.
I highly doubt that any of Adrian Neville, Sami Zayn, Kallisto, Hideo Itami, etc. will ever even get close to winning the WWE title. Sami I could just about imagine winning it, on some underdog type scenario. If anything, him being built as the highly decorated kingpin of a cruiserweight division would make him seem like more of a threat IMO. The rest of those guys can either be great Cruiserweight title contenders, or random midcard jobbers.
