Have a lot of people blocked* here, but dont think anybody gave the obvious answer.

Was true then, but even more true now. Position-less basketball now has the tallest players as likely to be in midrange or 3 point area, as in the paint now on any set play.

In traditional NBA, 4s and 5s operated on the low blocks...and would provide help defense if a perimeter player got free and drove to the lane. Modern game has pulled the big men from the paint.
