Batista was well liked, but never considered a great. The Rock is on his own level and it made sense for Rocky to immediately be in a main event...

With Batista it just comes off as fake and pointless

They haven't built any new stars and you can't bring back hulk, austin and rock back every year, you could moneywise but if you did that there is no room for HHH or his ideas, therefore they have to treat batista as rock and pretend it's a big deal that he is coming back, they would invalidate this entire new era gimmick if they basically were just throwing out the old guys all the time.

All those guys were built over the past year. They're finally building towards the future now, but honestly the last main event stars they created before now were Batista and Cena, 10 years ago.
