It wasn't really about the business passing him by, it was about the WWE's terrible booking at the time. Fans were anticipating Daniel Bryan being in the Royal Rumble that year. The obvious thing was for Bryan's defeat to Bray, then have a triumphant return to the Rumble, if not win, put on a great showing. Bryan not being in that Rumble screwed both Batista AND Rey Mysterio, as the crowd completely shyt on both of them. Combine that with the fact that Batista's best is when he's a heel, you make for a complete bomb of a return.
