This image takes me back sooooo much. Back before netflix/streaming movies....where if you found a foreign or unknown gem like this, it felt special and meaningful. I actually had to order this from fukking asia...and make sure that it was the right region and encode....

Was only like a decade ago but feels ancient nowadays....
I got into this like *right* at the perfect time too...early highschool, I believe freshmen or sophomore year. No-softness...but a lot of the themes and ideas really "resonated with me" at the time. I used to search up dedicated fansights and chat about it and shyt (Once again, fukking ancient practice).
"Could you kill your best friend"....

Movies like this is why I'll keep my DVD collection forever.
Ohhhh Mitsuko Souma. Only character whose name I remember by heart...how I loved you so....

This bytch was BAD. I wanted her to win....

She went out like a soldier though....
It's been some time since I've seen it...probably over a decade. It's in my netflix queue and I'm actually a little torn on whether to watch it again or not. The nostalgia I have for it shines so bright. I might be better off if I just never watch it again..the memories I have of it now are very fulfilling.
In regards to the second one....not as good, in neither execution nor premise. While the idea of kids being placed in a battle royale is ridiculous...the first film doesn't dwell on it too much and just kind of makes it work. The second films premise probably isn't that much more insane (The government has decided to recruit kids to fight terrorist), but they *really* beat you over the head with the anti-American rhetoric. This came out during the height of the Iraq War and it's a clear condemnation of Bush and his administration. While I'm certainly not against critiquing this country....the first film had some nuance to it's social commentary (And iirc, even that was a little heavy handed)...sequel got a little too focused on the macro issues, while the first film still slowed things down and actually felt like it was more about teenager issues (with a small dosage of critique on Japanese society). I actually only ever watched the sequel once.
Oddly enough, I actually got the second movie for free. It just arrived in the mail one day, I never ordered it. The address on the outside was for me, but the invoice paper inside the packaging was for some cat in Texas. I used to order from this hong kong website, I think there was some sort of mixup on their end. Obviously I kept that bytch....

Not a big deal nowadays, but back when I was a teen that had to use my parents card to order these films from god knows where, it felt like a big win....
