Newton's 3rd law. If he's gonna launch 300 pounds horizontally, then something is going to absorb that force in the opposite direction. Some light-ass ladder with a guy holding it can't take that. The ladder is going to launch in one direction, and you're only going to be able to clear with as much force and you launched the ladder with.

Yeah. If someone was braced behind the ladder then maybe he could have launched forward but he pretty much just fell straight down into the pain pit.
