Community concerned about disturbing photo allegedly taken at S.C. day care
GAFFNEY, S.C. -
Police and social services are investigating a day care operation in Gaffney, S.C. after neighbors became concerned about a picture that surfaced on social media.
Bridgette Dawkins said the first time she saw this photo, it made her sick.
"It's very disturbing," she said.
Dawkins lives just a few doors down from a house, where investigators say a 15-year-old girl jammed her toe in a baby's mouth several days ago and took a photo of it and sent it out on Snapchat.
"It's all over Gaffney," Dawkins said. "Everybody. Once they hit the computer, and everybody found out. Everybody knows."
An NBC affiliate stopped by the house and it didn't look like anyone was home. The news crew didn't knock because there was a "No trespassing" sign in the front yard.
People in the neighborhood said the homeowner ran a day care there.
BUT the Department of Social Services said it wasn't a licensed one.
Under South Carolina law, the homeowner would need a day care license if she watched more than one unrelated child on a regular basis.
Dawkins said she sees kids at the house all the time but isn't sure if it's a day care or not.
She said the baby in the photo is her friend's daughter and she believes whoever did it should pay.
"Somebody should be apologizing, and there should be something done about it," Dawkins said. "It don't need to be pushed under the rug. She needs to be punished."
Police are looking into whether or not other children are being cared for in the home, and they say the case will be referred to the South Carolina Department of Juvenile Justice, which could send the case to the family court.
