kinda in line with what youre saying, in my hood back then we used to get on this kid cuz he was the only one who thought pharcyde was better than onyx. as time has gone on for me pharcyde takes that by a wide margin whether its bizarre ride vs bacdafucup or the groups in general.

not that ive matured any, but back then i was under the false impression that harder equaled better. once i got past that and looked at music with a more critical eye like you said the perspective changed, not that i cant appreciate some ignant or gangsta shyt thats done well all around.

@stomachlines I feel you and agree. I can't listen to this dumb retarded shyt at all now. But it's funny that you mention gangsta rap back in the day. I rarely listen to it. I mean I keep DJ Quik in heavy rotation, but he has the grooves and his albums weren't all about gangsta shyt. Can't tell you the last time I listen to NWA. I just stick to the light rap so to speak now. ha ha. It has to be a blend of topics talked about. 8ball & MJG and Goodie Mob comes to mind. They hit on a lot of different topics and would mix in the gangsta shyt.

Last week I found myself jamming to Rapper's Delight... them community center nikkas was flowin :stylin:

I still like some gangster rap. They are like action flicks. I like any rap that doesn't take itself too seriously, which includes a lot of gangster rap.

A lot of the shyt out these days is garbage though. I have pretty much abandoned giving any new artist a chance. For every 100 new artists I check for I might find like 3-4 I listen to, and even then those guys get boring after like a year. Meanwhile I'm still listening to shyt like Camp Lo on a regular basis. Plus as I get older I'm giving less of a fukk about music in the first place. I have a whole mixtape written I just have no desire to record

i don't care what nobody say, certain shyt like gangsta rap becomes old, redundant and harder or just hard to listen to the older you get. don't get me wrong, i still occasionally will listen to a song here and there out of nostalgia but not like i did 10 to 15 and 20 years ago when i was knee deep into hip hop. a lot of shyt just becomes harder to listen too; well, at least it has for me with more and more time :yeshrug:

that's why songs like this are timeless in hip hop :blessed:

Some of the new shyt I can fukk with, but I can't count the amount of times I've heard fast food type rappers who are fukkin clones just do the same shyt with no different style at all.

There was bullshyt music back then too tbh :patrice:

You did actually have to be able to rap before by having some kind of skill. Now, it doesn't even matter for a lot of cats. No diversity in style either. Almost like who can outclone who.

I don't feel that way at all. If the shyt is dope...I'm fukking with it. The only thing my age is really effecting is me going to shows! The last Curren$y show I went to I definitely felt my age...thank god I don't look it :jawalrus:

Yeah the new shyt is garbage. I know the older stuff was propped up musically by songs that were already hits but damn, at least it was good music. If im listening to music now, ill get on spotify and put it on the jazz-funk playlist and when i hear a song i like i then go to that artist and play some of their albums. Been listening to a lot of Lonnie Liston Smith lately. Its either that or ill listen to some deep/chill house and go through those artists. I dont put it on the new hip hop playlists at all.

yea i feel you OP.I dont see how you can call yourself a "conscious" black person and not be atleast a LITTLE bothered by lyrics about blacks killing other blacks and the flooding of dope into black communities. Alot of it is pure mental poison.

And to top it off, the flooding of negative music on black airwaves is BY DESIGN:
