that's been a lot of nikkas their whole career.. jada, sigel, jay, nas, etc etc... even dead prez had some on the block slanging raps on lets get free. all in the same gang/self destruction was filled with rappers who also talked that street shyt....
that's always been hip hop's double edge sword. we do speak on fukk the cops, why we killing each other, lets all get rich together, black power, etc... same rappers talk about slanging drugs, killing nikkas and fukking slutty bytches two songs later.. i know the coli operates the same way with the threads.. i know nikkas in real life who think the same way... people are random and a little bit of everything
I feel you and agree that this has always been hip hop, and to a larger extent, the black communities double edged sword.
shyt, I'm guilty of it myself at times.
The one thing I disagree on is the Self Destruction and Let's Get Free comments.
The rappers on Self Destruction were for the most part not rappers that glorified the negative aspects of the streets.
You could say KRS was on that street shyt on Criminal Minded, but for the most part, everybody that participated on that record (KRS, Ms. Melodie, D-Nice, Lyte, Stetsasonic, Heavy, Doug, and PE) was pretty much on some conscious, community based shyt, or at least strictly party shyt for most of their careers.
And I don't recall Dead Prez glorifying any street shyt outside of banging on Police and the Government on Let's Get Free.
The other rappers you named (Jada, Sigel, Jay, and Nas(to a lesser extant than the others)) was always conscious when it was convenient, but they mostly sold thinly veiled, incredible sounding poison to the community.
