Portuguese and Spanish are not that different except for a couple vowel differences. My Portuguese best friend can pick up Spanish very well.

I can speak fluent Patois but I really only use it when talking to the elders in my family, if I'm asked to or if i'm in the middle of a heated argument lol. I knew some Igbo when I was younger but I forgot all of it damn near so I have to take some time and commit to teaching myself the language and take it serious this time...what I really want to learn is Spanish and French though.

I recommend Assimil French. It is about $50 on Amazon. Make sure to get both the book and CDs. Assimil also has a Dutch course but it is about $100.

Assimil is simply a book with French dialogues on one side and the French translation on the other page with some notes of explanation. The cds are 100% in the target language. Most libraries in the US have the Living Language course which is similar to Assimil.

The problem with learning an African language is that there are few resources. Also, it is difficult to find someone to speak with. Romantic partners make poor language tutors.
