Can you write in Igbo too? I've been teaching myself how to speak both of my parents' dialects but I still have no clue how to write it.

Fam, my parents can't even write in Igbo :dead:

But honestly, I don't know a single Igbo person who can correctly and completely (all the stresses and accent marks) write in Igbo.

Give igbo people an igbo book and watch them ask you for the english version brehs :skip:

Igbo, centralized dialect (the kind they teach in schools)

I could always understand it, but never spoke it when I was young. Parents wanted us to "succeed" so they spoke only English around us.
Yeaaars later, I had to teach myself.

Now my parents are mad at me cuz I don't speak their dialect :dwillhuh:

You had 20+ years to teach me, now you mad cuz I say dalu around you? :dame:

But my igbo is getting really :flabbynsick:. Most of the 9ja people my age only know "biko" and "kedu" :francis:
same here, trying to learn my moms language (very small language btw) but grew up speaking only English and my whole family including my mom like "why you only speak English?"

Me:
:stopitslime: "That's what you taught us "

As a bilingual(English/Spanish), I can relate to the sentiments in this thread. However, the true test is becoming a "polyglot" which I feel I'll never reach because (mostly personal opinion) the brain drain and time it took me to become competent in Spanish and my desire to go through the process to maintain proficiency in the other languages I've learned, including my mother tongue, English.

Which goes into the most important reason.... My English proficiency has taken a hit, albeit, a small one, it's noticeable. Lucky I'm not in school or have a job that requires heavy communication skills. I would be exposed.

Yeah but have you mastered either language. It's amazing how many native language speakers do not use proper grammar.

I (try to)use proper grammar. As I've already mentioned, my English has taken a hit because of all the info I have to retain to maintain a decent amount of fluency in Spanish.

I've received props (and hate) for the level of Spanish I use on here. The reason I can communicate so well is because of the level of English I can speak. Even though my vocabulary may not be genius level, I read, write, and speak my mother tongue at college level. The information and techniques I used to learn English were applied to Spanish. Most learners take shortcuts to learn languages. I learned Spanish from the ground.... up.
