It's vicious.

Gotta have a support system... and don't let your pride get in the way of using the shyt out of them.

Keep your head high and grind daily, take breaks, but never get comfortable.

They enjoy to see you happily fail...and it bolsters their false sense of superiority.

You're there because you earned it and you belong there. Most of the Asians and Hadjis had their wheels greased.

Luckily I decided to go to an HBCU to get my undergrad degree. We all looked out for each other. Before that I was like an island.

Truth and nothing but the truth. Also I went to college in the south to be exact. At a white college, but in a state with a large black population (Mississippi). We were all up in them Stem classes and looked out for each other.

It just depends on what state you in and what college you go to.

Wouldn’t be the only black if you were at an HBCU :sas1:

Complaining about being being the only black person in a class at a majority white school is like complaining about it being cold in the winter
Is a HBCU a viable option?
The one here, Langston University, is not ABET accredited. So as a engineering major, it would be pointless to go there and get a degree.

There was a female troll poster on SOHH back in the day, "Moonite Girl" i think it was. she said something like "nikkas reach their peak in highschool and the majority are useless afterwards...:"

she might have been partially right :ld:

depending on the course or program, it was usually me and like 4 other black guys back in the days of uni

Stupid ass nikka

I didn't really have this issue in college. Always was at least one other black person in the class outside of maybe 1 or 2. :yeshrug:

My senior design class had like 15/100 of people who were black in it which is a high number and infact overrepresented for our 14% demographic size.

Lmfao STEM in HBCUs full of non black folks too and usually are the smallest classes.

Black folks mainly go to school for goofy ass mass comm or psychology at HBCUs. Few with some what sense do something business related. Very few HBCUs go hard with STEM. Id say NCAT and FAMU are the best at that.

I wish more saw this during that journey. There will be times you wonder how are they picking this up so quickly. U have to understand that there are advantages that are unseen.
When they don't bother with the job fairs it's cuz their parents work at Shell.
When they don't worry about upcoming tests it's cuz they're already have the old ones
When they ask questions u never thought to even ask it's cuz they were exposed to this way earlier than you

Hard work can beat most of them but networking is literally everything.

I wish we knew how much we don't know.

Still at work. Will post later if thread is still popping

As an CS undergrad there were two brehs (inc. me) in my core class in total and one brehette in my class of around 40. Two Caribbeans and one Nigerian. One got a 3rd, one failed the year and then there was me near the top of the class. In the joint EE lectures there were two more African brehs in a class of about 100. We had a couple of upper-crust yts who hated my guts. I didn't understand what was going on at first because I was not raised like that.

As a Computation postgrad there were 3 brehs (1 mixed breh/english + 2 Caribbeans) in my class of 30. Mixed breh was the top student probably in the class. He is now a lecturer in the department. I did fine. The other breh failed the course. In my college (collegiate system vs. subject lectures), of several hundred, there was me and a single solitary US-breh and he stayed away from college most of the time. So it was effectively just me. I am not sure how I would have handled that as an undergrad.

Since then, more or less every company that I have worked at has been less than 1% breh. A few were too big to know the full staff demographic so I am not sure about them. In general in my local day-to-day working life brehs/brehettes have been rare. At my last 4 gigs in I was the only breh in the local office. In the one prior to that there were less than 15 in a company of around 5000 people. The disrespect and animosity was palpable throughout my time there but I learned a lot about how some people hate, think and act irrespective of what you do. I used to visit the London office every now and then and the side-eye was everywhere. Most of the ancillary staff in London were brehs/brehettes - with a yt boss.

At my last company gcreh manager excused the poor communication with me by one of the project managers by saying "Yous a big nizza so he is probably scared of you".

#cacland life. EU style.

Flipped around though Guyana finds oil and these people swarm in like locusts to grab all the best seats.

CS for me was the same, Indians and Asians cheated throughout the courses, I studied and created my own lecture material...

This one Jewish guy had the old exams and old homeworks and still failed this Programming Langauge Concepts (based on Haskell) 3 times!!!! The whole class had people taking this 2/3 times as well....

My first time through I ended up with a B after acing the Exam and being an active participant during lectures (I had a D
average most of the semester tho).....

Anyway...focus on your own self and workflow and study solo...don't worry about what the others are doing.....

Im in tech and being ground zero it blows my mind how people outside of it be thinking asians/indians are some wizards when they are just normal people. The thing is their nations created initiatives where they said they would be the worlds tech force so this is why you see this.

You rarely see black people in tech and when you do its usually IT or something dealing with maintaining/fixing things not actual product creation.

Damn I wonder if I just got lucky, I guess, that while my classes definitely had more Asians and Indians, black folks all the way up to senior years weren't that scarce in my classes as you guys experienced. Like I said I was shocked how many black folks were in my senior design class. But there was always at least 2 other black people of not more in most of my classes. Trying to think of which class I was the only black person...I guess data structures 2 I think that was one of the only ones.

In the process of finally choosing a major.

My math skills. :to:

I have to start from scratch. :to:

Though I don't know when I gather the necessary skills if I would go the stem route as I don't find it appealing.

Breh I hate math growing up and struggled to pass math classes while aceing humanities and history. I know a lot of STEM majors who have the same story. When I went back for my degree, I had my mind on success so when I went into the math classes starting from college algebra (precalc/trig) I was nervous but something clicked and I was able to do math like I wasn't able to in middle and highschool. Probably because I actually tried instead of shutting my mind off in frustration.

Don't let that shyt deter you. If youre determined to do well you can do that shyt.
