Believe it or not but back in 94 this now obscure album received more airplay than Illmatic.

This is just blatantly false.
It got 5 Mics in The Source and was given rave reviews in all the big publications of the day like Spin and Rolling Stone. It didn’t take years for shyt it was right away.

I know it got Press.

I'm saying in Toronto it wasn't huge. It was but not like Digable Planets.

It also didn't go platinum untill much later, more than five years later.

That's what I saw.

But again, I wasn't in New York.

Illmatic was basically one of those albums that people didn’t fully appreciate until years later. :yeshrug:

It's literally impossible to gauge when an old album went gold/plat.

The certification process doesn't even start until the label pays the audit fee.

They never pay the fee? The certifications never get updated.

They pay the fee 20 years later? It's updated 20 years later.

It doesn't mean it took 20 years to go gold/plat.

If you look at Wayne's certifications on RIAA, he had like 15-20 of them updated the same day for this very same reason.

I remember that Dred album. Mostly for the production though. I remember Illmatic as a slow burn in the mainstream but the anticipation was definitely there and it was heralded from day one by those that heard him on Live at the BBQ and kept paying attention. Halftime was the first Nas song were I could tell he was different, amazing wordplay and imagery, Illmatic proved he could do it for an entire a body of work.

One of my best friends when I was a kid, copped this album and put me on to it, back then.

Dope album, that kinda flew under the radar a little bit. There were just too many classics dropping at the time. Dude used to have a million ads in The Source, but I didn't know a lot of people who knew about the project. But I played this a lot back in the day. He did his own beats too, so I always thought that was dope. I still throw this on every now and then. Definitely takes me back to those years.

Dude had mad potential but maybe he decided that beat making for his true calling. :yeshrug:

Last I heard he was still producing, mainly for his wife who is a underground singer.

IIRC Illmatic received little to no promotion at all. It Was Written actually put Nas into the public spotlight. :yeshrug:
Yup. The single with Ms Hill is what made him blow up and the rest is history... and the song in the OP i've never heard ever ...sounds like a bootleg Ahmad song
