Just quoting myself from the documentary thread:
I thought this was really good and a pretty fascinating look behind the scenes with a star college athlete. To see all of the scouts and agents/shoe reps at every game/practice was pretty crazy. That has to be really overwhelming for a teenager and he seemed really isolated by the end of his time at LSU.
Few personal thoughts on some people in the film:
His sister Emily: She's his marketing person. Not sure what to make of her. She got in with Rich Paul and Klutch Sports a couple years ago and basically hand delivered Ben to them. That's a theme with every business decision he makes.
Rich Paul: Came off kinda sleazy to me and pretty much admitted that the only reason he hired Emily as a "marketing consultant" was to get close earlier than anyone else and make sure he signed with Klutch. On the surface, he doesn't come off as very bright and I'll be very intrigued to see how Klutch does once LeBron retires and he doesn't have that hammer in his back pocket anymore.
His brother (can't remember his name): Said he was a real life Turtle (from Entourage).
His parents: Seemed like decent people and it looks like they raised him well. It felt like they've been handling Ben as a business since he was in high school though and I wonder what kind of effect that has. They sent him to the States alone from Australia his sophomore year and didn't move over here until he was a senior. That struck me as incredibly odd.
Ben Simmons: I thought he came off pretty well adjusted and mature in this (I know that's part of the point). Didn't seem like a stereotypical entitled athlete. Seemed level headed and focused, but didn't see a lot of joy out of him once he came to the States. Again, everything around him was all business and he was very isolated. His handling all seemed to be a favor to somebody else. Went to LSU because of his dad's connection to the coaches. Signed with Klutch Sports because of his sister (didn't take a meeting with any other agencies). Signed with Nike because of Klutch Sports, which was one of the more interesting parts of the film. It looked like he and everybody else loved the Adidas pitch to him and they wanted him bad, but he still went with Nike.
Would definitely recommend this to everyone on here.
The sister that's airing him out definitely has mental health problems. The clips and FT they ran of her showed her in a desperate light trying to re-connect with Ben.
