I know street dudes in every NY borough and none of them are white nor do they know what a message board is. They never heard of Reddit. These guys are ex dealers, gangsters, etc. I'm the nerd who had to put them onto Conway because they're not online like that. I literally had to show them how to find shyt and extract zip files. That's their audience but the streets don't buy shyt or go to concerts. These are the same guys with a whole DVD collection they copped from the barber shop. It's always been that way. 50 and Wu had the streets but look at the tours now and damn near everyone's white. Don't confuse the consumers with the entire audience.

You're trying to use what teenyboppers listen to take a shot at Griselda because you don't like them. You can make the same argument for damn near every 35+ rapper unless their music and persona caters to the mainstream like Kendrick, Cole, and Tyler but they all have largely white fanbases and little street support.
You think the past generation of the streets dudes disappeared, moved to the burbs, or got ran off the block? Them older guys are still in Brownsville, Bushwick, South Bronx, Harlem, Southside Jamaica, etc. Some of them are still active career criminals. Some of them aren't but still present in that environment. They're still street nikkas and you won't tell them different. The YN's in NY listen to drill and a bunch of auto tune shyt or they got into hip hop around the A Boogie era. They don't know Griselda but their fathers, uncles, and OG's do.

Bad example though, because Tragedy is a career criminal and already a felon during Intelligent Hoodlum era. So, as others said, he's still from that element, he was just using his brain. And even War Report era, his music was still smart gangster, as his moniker states "Intelligent Hoodlum." Being from an element but trying to enlighten your peers is still street. Play was a stick-up kid, but still loved to dance and party and did things to escape that other life. The streets at that time were all about doing other things, positive things, to take you out of the poverty mind state.
That's not what Benny was talking about though. That's you talking about something different. Benny was talking about when the streets had a hold on the game. Tragedy's music when he was the Intelligent Hoodlum reflected the conscious era of that time not the street element that would take hold by the mid 90'. Tragedy's music didn't even reflect what Benny is talking about till CNN came out with War Report. Tragedy literally switched it up because the game had moved from conscious to street by the time CNN came out. Benny is talking about that era when War Report was popping not the Intelligent Hoodlum era.
But the "streets" and the streets Benny is talking about aren't even the same. The streets is simply outside, the voice of the people, and everyone that it's composed of. No matter the era of the time, the music always reflected it, as it is the voice/mind state of what's going on outside. Everyone in the hood isn't a drug dealer scammer robber. The radio hosts, the DJs, the bboys, the MCs, the park/block parties, the neighborhood, the cars are all apart of the culture. This is who moved the culture forward.
Now, what Benny is talking about has always existed, however, it was based on the people - the people of the culture. The nerds were still the magazine writers (Vibe, Source, XXL, Word Up), the VJs (Video Soul, Rap City, MTV Raps), the talk shows (Teen Summit), the radio hosts, but all of these people were from the neighborhood. They just had degrees.
The culture shifted because the people allowed the money to interfere too much. And now what is determined as being the culture is driven by 0s & 1s, and those who control the 0s & 1s; and not the actual people first. What counts as the streets now is that it exists online, because if it doesn't exist there, you pretty much don't exist. That said, that internet geeks that never been outside still make up his fanbase, so he really can't complain.

I think you need to re read what I was saying in that specific quote. Intelligent Hoodlum was at the very bottom of the Juice Crew totem pole. So it doesn't matter if he was a street dude doing conscious raps, his voice as an influence was in the mix but it wasn't the loudest because hecwasctoo underground. So him being underground when there were louder more visible mainstream conscious rappers, confirms that his voice (since he was repping the streets as you say)wasn't the end all be all. He would have been a minority voice not the majority voice. So bringing up Intelligent Hoodlum, being that he was a minority voice repping the streets, doesn't help the argument that 'the streets had the major voice
in the culture', which is the point of that comment you quoted.
