It’s #BlackHistoryMonth and I have to ask: Are people including enslaved Africans, descendants of those enslaved, and Black people whose unjust, low-wage labor sustained the economy in the 1800s/1900s as immigrants when they say “immigrants built this country”? Because chattel slavery was for the express purpose of building empire. But our ancestors weren’t folks who came here seeking a better life. They arrived in chains, were bred like cattle, and severely violated, sexually and otherwise. Their trauma shouldn’t be diminished or forgotten, even in efforts toward freedom from ICE’s inhumane, violent tactics. We can only get to justice for all when truth is taught, embraced, and spoken.

:salute: Keep speaking the truth to people that minimize our people and what our people have been through.

From Karl Marx in 1847: Without slavery, you have no cotton. Without cotton, you have no modern industry. Cause slavery to disappear and you will have wiped America off the map of nations (to which Ron retorts: I wonder if Marx ever got tired of always being wrong?) /search?q=#AskTSOE @ronaldbaker @edkless

I always hated that lie because it implies our ancestors immigrated into slavery.

The truth is we are the only people that didn't immigrate to a country for a better life. Our ancestors had to build this country and fight for its continued existence.

Shout out to Bernice King. :salute:

I’m going to go out on a limb here…until a few years ago, the immigrants built this country saying was standard American political speak. As in every single person who wasn’t indigenous to the Americas, was an immigrant here. Political ads and jargon felt that was a safe message. Not in this political climate it’s not anymore

There’s been a push to extend that to the modern day as well, as in immigration throughout American history built the country.

Then there’s the interpretation that many FBA an black ppl have issue with, Tariq himself was getting this off, that slavery is being completely written off as the main factor that gave this country the head start it has. Which is not wrong at all, by any means. It’s a fact.

Edit: it’s was such a cheat code to wealth, the country almost fell apart over it, and is still trying to come to terms with the loss of it
