He's my top choice too, as I have Arrival and Blade Runner in my top 10 of the decade. Damien Chazelle is a close second though, with La La Land, Whiplash and First Man.

Disagree on it being a “clear” choice. I think Coogler, Chazelle, and Nolan had films equally as good as anything Villeneuve did. Loved Sicario and Arrival...thought Blade Runner and Prisoner were overrated. Could have easily been another choice to me.

Villeneuve had made solid films I'm not mad at that pick. Prisoners was great.

Imma go with Nolan, although last decade was significantly better, Nolan still set the bar for directors this decade to follow.

Not surprised. Are we commenting on the choice or suggesting other possibilities? I think Nolan’s body of work is comparable with a bigger mainstream impact.

Nolan was my first choice but Villeneuve's sense of atmosphere pushes him over the top.

Those Batman movies were not exceptional cinema. It was an exceptional take on a comic based character by a director. Not stand alone excellence. Big fish in a little (comic)pond.
