I get what you mean, representation and all that but it's just not true. I'd say that 95% percent of Dominican youth grows up in the same environment as black Americans. Listen to the same music, run in the same neighborhoods, go through similar life experiences etc. The only difference is the language barrier so there's nothing really that would make it "uncool" or make em feel like an outsider in the game. The popularity of Dominican rap is an all time high back in the islands. And it has little to do with Dominican rappers repping where there from and more with them going "Yo, I feel where that non-Dominican rapper is coming from. I been there too. I know that spot he rapping about and have had similar experiences.

For one you have to remember we are talking about rappers who dropped between 12-22 years ago, not today. You don't need any external validation to blow up in hip-hop now. You just need a hot song that catches on. No one really cares about your backstory. Does anyone know if Desiigner ever graduated high school? Do most people know Kodak Black was in a rap group 6 years ago and has videos on Youtube? Not really. I doubt most people care.
