A guy the established audience hates vs. "A guy only back to promote his movie" is not a good marketing move

A guy the established audience hates vs. A returning and loved Icon, is much better.

Fortunately reality took precedent and Rock remained the face and the fans didn't turn on him, but simply the idea they'd even try to make Cena the face against any loved legend, especially one of the Big 3, is mind bogglingly dumb

By the end of their feud, Mania 29, it was pretty much what you said first. They both got booed, and deservedly so because the program/match wasn't good, at Mania 29.

Late to this but:

Hollywood Rock in Toronto is one of the rare moments a raucous crowd went quiet because a heel sonned them so bad ... pure ether.

IMO Dusty Rhodes' "Hard Times" speech is the GOAT babyface promo, and why I think he's one of the top 5 pure talkers in wrestling history.

And to all the people that mentioned ECW Foley. Back in HS I had his "Greatest Hits and Misses" (One of the best WWE DVDs ever btw) DVD, and one thing that stuck out to me was the rule he mentioned about heel promos: "The bad guy always has to believe he's right". The real life stress that Mick Foley, father and husband fueled the Cactus Jack persona, and the bitterness he spewed towards the fans and Tommy Dreamer here was
