hip-hop isn't what kept her career alive.

Missy Elliott's biggest singles are "Work It" and "Get Ur Freak On". Both singles from her two biggest albums which contain more rapping than singing. She has a total of 5 consecutive platinum albums with one gold one and she dropped six albums in 8 years. Also had some moderate gits within the last few years. So,

1) You don't know the definition of novelty act

2) Her career was actually extended by Hip Hop.

3) You actually have no Hip Hop pedigree dissing Missy while championing Hammer who really was a novelty act.
