Put another way, if you have some kind of currupted OS files making it impossible to properly load the OS(operating system) the adapter goes around those files and allows you to use the attached Hdd like an external hard drive.

It's the same process as plugging in your cell phone to move pictures & music to and from your phone onto the PC.

well, the bad drive doesn't have the os on it - it was really just for storage. like i said, i run windows off a seperate ssd.

but yeah, i get what the adapter does. that just might work. good looks.

@videogamestashbox.com

so picked up the usb to sata but it's saying "unknown usb device (device descriptor request failed)" in the device manager. when i click on it, it says windows stopped the device because it reported problems (code 43).

i tried it first with the bad hdd, then i tried plugging in a perfectly good ssd in with it and i'm getting the same message. i tried them in different usb slots too. same thing.

this just a bad adapter or something?

Just create a live cd with Ubuntu and backup your files on a new external, Google Drive, etc.

Buy another drive and back it up.

Then buy another drive to back up the backup and stash it in a safe place outside your home.

Return the adapter for a new one. :patrice: ....BTW good move on testing it with a working drive as a process of elimination to narrow down where the problem lies. :ehh:
Otherwise I might have said the drive isn't readable.:francis:
