You underestimate how much western companies are spending on licensing anime over here. Sony will control the entire market with this acquisition. It prettty much makes them the Netflix of anime

they now own a good chunk of the western anime market
they own 95% of Funimation and now 100% own Crunchyroll
plus these are streaming services. the revenue from them will keep them afloat

if sony owns it, they can feature it more prominently. anybody with PS+ can now be marketed to for free. if there are more eyeballs on CR, that app has to get a makeover.
