O'Rourke announces bid to take on Greg Abbott in 2022 Texas gubernatorial race

(CNN)Beto O'Rourke, the former congressman and 2020 Democratic presidential candidate, on Monday launched his campaign to unseat Texas Gov. Greg Abbott in 2022.

"I'm running for governor," he tweeted alongside a video announcement. "Together, we can push past the small and divisive politics that we see in Texas today -- and get back to the big, bold vision that used to define Texas. A Texas big enough for all of us."

In launching a campaign that many Democrats in Texas had identified as the party's only chance of denying Abbott a third term, O'Rourke -- an El Paso native and former punk rocker who launched an internet services company and served on the city council before being elected to Congress in 2011 -- is making his third run for office in four years.

His first statewide run in Texas, a long-shot Senate campaign against Republican Ted Cruz in 2018, electrified Democrats in a state where the party has rarely been competitive for a generation.

He rose from little-known congressman to fundraising dynamo, setting what at the time was the all-time record for money raised for a Senate bid. And he did it with a relatively bare-bones campaign structure, mostly driving himself to campaign events across the state with two staffers and live-streaming it all on Facebook.

O'Rourke's near-miss in the Senate race -- he finished less than 3 percentage points behind Cruz -- led to a short-lived presidential run the following year. By the time he dropped out of the race in October 2019, Democrats in Texas were already publicly musing about him as a candidate for governor in 2022.

He didn't say that:

"“Hell yes, we’re going to take your AR-15, your AK-47,” O’Rourke famously said to roaring applause from a crowd at Texas Southern University. “We’re not going to allow it to be used against our fellow Americans anymore.”"

“Most of us understand the responsibility that comes with owning a firearm, and we will vigorously protect that Second Amendment right and also protect the lives of those around us,” he said. “But I think most of us also understand that we should not have military-style weapons used against our fellow Texans. We have four of the worst mass shootings in U.S. history right here in Texas that took place over the last five years.”

I found this interesting, I guess polls might be leaning a little left:

But in 2019, a poll found that there were more Texans who said they supported a mandatory buyback program to turn in all assault weapons than those who opposed it. Nearly half of Texans supported the buyback program, while about 29% said they opposed it, according to a poll by the University of Texas at Tyler. The rest of the respondents either were neutral or unsure.

A University of Texas/Texas Tribune poll from October 2019 found that 59% of Texas voters support a nationwide ban on semiautomatic weapons, compared to 33% who oppose the policy. The approval rating included 86% of Democrats, 56% of independents and 35% of Republicans."

Beto O’Rourke went after assault rifles in his run for president. Will that hurt him with gun-loving Texans?

Thank you, I skipped much of this (election sphere and debates/Dem field), not because the ideas aren’t worth it but the 25-dwindle is absurd.

Im actually quite intrigued to see how he plays that off in this campaign.

Well if @JJ Lions is right about more than half of Texans support assault rifles buyback, then he should have a much better chance of winning. If we're being honest, if he didn't make that comment, he'd have his choice of Governor or Senator.

Give people an inch and they take a mile. Hes 100% going to be painted as anti 2nd amendment in a gun loving state. He can say what he wants but theyll just say "it starts with the assault weapons, next thing you know it's all guns, admit it beto". Then it's a question of believability.

He has a chance but regardless of what he meant during that debate it created an uphill battle for him politically in texas. We'll see how it plays out

Those comments were made while running for the Dem nod/President, so they played better at the time. More for the general population.

Running for Gov of Texas, he just needs to drill it down and be very clear. It's not all guns, just certain types. And if most Texans agree with him, won't be as big a deal. It'll fire up the right as this topic usually does but I'm not sure about everybody else.

I'm sure more current polls will be coming out on this issue.
