Better actor: Idris Elba or Mahershala Ali

Elba. Ali ain't really been that good outside of House of Cards. Overrated in Moonlight and Luke Cage.

I actually thought he was just ok in HoC. Luke Cage I really felt him though

It won't take much for him to top season 2 that's for damn sure.

both are good actors, and despite ali having an oscar, I have never seen moonlight, nor do I have any interest in doing so. idris kinda wins just for the wire alone.

I want to see Ali in a leading role first before I make that call glad he got True Detective season 3 later this year.

Ali hasn't gotten the body of work or roles yet to say he's better than Idris. That being said, Idris is good but that's mostly because how much we like him. I haven't seen a great performance by him yet.

That's a good comparison, they both have a strong cool factor. I haven't seen The Wire though, so any opinion I'd have would be incomplete.

Luther is his best work

I like him in Luther, but Beasts of No Nation and the Wire...those are his more prolific roles.

Elba over Ali. Ali was damned good in Green Book and is killing it in True Detective, though.

Elba is a good actor, I just wish him/his team would pick some better roles, an actor of his talent should not have such a shytty catalogue. Luther is dope but I dislike the pass he gets because of the wire, nah bro that was a long time ago, he needs to up the consistency.
