Rex never bothered to scour for talent defensively unless it was a high pick or marquee name (and half the time he whiffed with high picks)
Kind of the way he scouts offense. If you played well against his defense one time he likes you. Seems similar to how they drafted this year as they basically took everyone from FSU who probably played well against Clemson.

never had no Ray Lewis, Haloti Ngata, Ed Reed, Terrell Suggs, Michael McCrary, Peter Boulware, Revis for 4 Years and them. did it with undrafted Free Agents and cast offs for the most part.
The Patriots have had some very average to below average defensive teams over the years. Rex as a DC and head coach has had maybe a couple of seasons where his defense wasn't considered in the top half and that's even better considering the fact they had to be on the field longer because of the piss poor offenses he's had to work with.
