Rap City... It was corny at times, but by '93 it was the clear favorite. They played EVERYTHING. Sometimes that was for the worst, but most of the time, it was guaranteed you were gonna see any video worth seein' on there.
But can't sh*t on Yo! for what it meant to/for hip-hop. People forget that was the show that gave a lotta artists a platform they didn't have at the time. It's crazy how MTV killed that show... it's like they fell in love with it when it took off and ran it like crazy, then just changed their mind one year and buried it. Who the fukk's tunin' in at 12am on a Friday?
Stupid move. And for those saying Yo MTV Raps only played commercial artists is exaggerating a tad bit. Yes, Rap City highlighted more rappers and played more videos. And by 93/94, it became the overall better show. But Yo! highlighted videos from up and coming artists when they first came out (Diamond D, Showbiz and AG, Gang Starr, Jeru The Damaja, Twista when was known as Tongue Twista, Compton's Most Wanted, Pharcyde, Del The Funky Homosapien, and a few others come to mind) So yea, Rap City at the time showed love to EVERYBODY. But Yo! also showed love to non mainstream rappers as well.
