YBE is more 80s NYC Whodini 808 sounding than "dark and gritty" imo. Fresh's sound was closer to that than the mid 90s coke rap.

I would say around 99'-2000. He said the same thing in rap pages. That era of new orleans mc's were fans of ny hip hop. Mannie, bg, wayne, lil derrick. Sad that lil derrick died cause he was on to something special meshing that local no sound with that ny flair
