It doesn't really matter what came first when both are having an effect on things, but I'm sure assimilating socially went hand in hand with the workplace. High yellow and wavy haired blacks had an advantage over most black people when it came to that, so I'm sure that played a part in the development of weaves and straight hair. Most black people probably sharecroppers in that era, but I'm sure the ones in industry and business were conking in order to fit into the white corporate world.Blacks where conking their hair before the work place and schools mattered, that is if you where hired.
Blacks wanted to be accepted socially.
It is actually one singular thing if you trace back to the orgins of why it was done in the first place.
Identity or lack thereof.
That being said, I think the main thing is that we are acknowledging these things.
