If they wanted to win they needed to do things they normally wouldn’t in order to secure future elections. Ditch benign neglect and actually deliver on your promises. Had they done that, Biden wouldn’t have needed to step down and even if he did, the next democrat would be stepping into a solid situation.

It wasn’t the endorsement, they intentionally didn’t set up a framework for a primary. If they REALLY wanted a primary, they would have announced the timeline with Biden‘s withdrawal and not left people in the dark.
