I am starting to wonder if Big E's neck really was in bad shape before the injury. Kind of like Misawa's death where his neck was in bad shape from many years of in-ring drops. Maybe not to Misawa's extent, but one where one good drop easily broke it.

I never thought about that. That's a good question.

I can think of at least three separate occasions where he almost broke his neck by fukking up the suicide dive through the middle rope, so it wouldn’t surprise me one bit if his neck was already in dreadful condition
Bruce Prichard said on his podcast one time lots of wrestlers (and athletes and even people in general I think) have chronic neck injuries and don’t realize it… so that’s very possible

A little known fact these days was Austin's neck was already hanging by a thread before the Owen piledriver and he'd been advised to retire back in May '97

Him and Orton should retire. You're supposed to still enjoy your life when you are old. Off their popularity alone, they could jump on podcast business, they could land some b-list movie roles, possibly commercials. They could land a job in a wrestling company to mentor and do stuff like that very easily. They are not starving, they are not garbage wrestlers who barely make a living.

This. Not enough guys make it out of the industry relatively healthy. Somebody gotta tell guys you don't have to go until you can't anymore.

Former WWE Champion Big E was a guest on this week’s After the Bell, and he discussed how he’s recovering from his neck injury. He noted while he’s feeling great physically at the moment, he doesn’t have a timetable for his return Below are some highlights (via WrestlingInc.com):

Big E on how he’s feeling physically: “I feel great. Unfortunately, I don’t have a timetable, but the great thing is, I feel 100 percent. I don’t even feel like somebody who broke their neck. My mobility is incredible, my strength is great, and I have no issues whatsoever. I wish I had some answers on returning to the ring — I got nothing, unfortunately.”

On not realizing he had suffered a broken neck at first: “I thought it was just a contusion, and didn’t realize my neck was broken at all. I thought I could get up and walk. Thankfully, people got to me before I could do that. [I’m] so thankful for the people in Birmingham, Dr. [Jeffrey] Dugas, who took great care of me. Even the people who texted and emailed me — fans, peers, loved ones.”

On the support he’s received since his injury: “I am grateful to everyone. I am so proud to be a part of this community and this industry.”
