:myman:

First listening right now reactions to the album in quarters.

1/4: :dahell:
2/4: :ohhh:
3/4: :lupe:
4/4: :leostare:

-So I after listening it seems he's is trying to make an experimental rock type album. Which I guess is why it sounds so cacophonic and distorted. So obviously he is veering from the Philly soul, hopefully not for long :beli:
-I mean he still has great vocals and inflections, and lyrics/chorus are ok. I think what has occurred to me is that he always sounds like this, but the production soundscape makes it sound like a distant relative of nails on the chalkboard.
-But for me on first listen I'm like :patrice: The thing is I like rock and I can dig a soul singer trying to do a rock album, but it's just half the songs aren't hitting on nothing
-
I think also what is hurting my senses is that the soundscape is very minimalist, with just a regular drum and its like the other instruments just happen to be walking by and hopped on the track :russ:.

The best tracks:
"Pleasure Toy"
"Satellites"
"Love Child"
"Holding it Back"
"Spiraling"
"Bury Me Next To You"

I guess 6/12 out aint' bad :ehh: I'll come back in a few days and give it another rewind, I'm sure some more tracks will begin to vibe with my sensibilities and expectations.

I would dig another rock type album by him, but it can't be the minimalist sounds, needs like a RHCP soundscape next time.

For a first time listen though, 6.5/10
you cant rock with open up the door breh?

I'll check back in a few days:youngsabo:

Shortly after releasing his latest album In Another Life, neo-soul veteran Bilal gives us a real look at the cost of money in his latest cinematic visual offering for “Money Over Love” featuring Kendrick Lamar. The Philly native recruits Hans Elder to direct an emotional rollercoaster of a video, which exposes what one couple will do for money in the name of love. The visual frequently reverts to a low-budget baptist church service scene, in which the pastor defends the sanctity of money, asking the philosophical question, “Why would ‘God’ be on money if it was evil?”
Kendrick does not make an appearance in this short-film-style music video. However, the congregation is seen turning up for the God-sent emcee’s verse, even providing him with shouting adlibs. Bilal can be found alongside his trusty partner-in-pimpin’ Adrian Younge, who produced the album, cruising in a drop-top Caddy through downtown L.A.—pimps keeping a keen eye out on their streets. “Some may listen to it and think I’m saying money is more important than love,” Bilal explains. “The video depicts a love story that is tainted by greed…Whether it’s justified or not, is for the people to decide

Going thru the album now, vocally I'm hearing Marvin and Prince influence infused with that Younge 70s production.
