I forgive you for the Pound Cake speech and the c00ning behavior you displayed from 2005 to 2008, Bill. Some black people really believe your motivations were pure and "tough loving" but those who looking beyond the surface of what you were saying knew you were

I understand that, and don’t disagree. My main point was about him shyting on Black people in front of White Supremacists like Bill O’Reilly, then wanting us to hold him down once those very same White Supremacists turned on him.
I remember when he wanted to donate a building to Morehouse but wanted it named after his wife so they refused and built it at Spelman instead
I remember him producing A Different World, which made me learn about college
I don’t think I’ve ever saw or read about him kowtowing to white supremacy

well during his infamous pound cake speech he pretty much deflected all blame from White supremacy and started pointing at black folks...... i mean
So black folks have 0 accountability for the fukkery that goes on in a lot of lower income black communities? Also, is that all you got?

He had been operating off the same worldview that most white people have "the world is just. Everyone is basically good inside. If you act right and follow the rules nothing bad will happen to you"

And if you listen closely he doesnt regret what he said. He just regrets making it sound like hes talking to all of us instead of just those of us who have been cursed with broken families, drugs flooding our streets, and teachers that dont give a fukk, govt that doesnt care enough to remove the lead paint and asbestos that causes behavioural problems and slows cognitive development. Yeah, let's not have any pity for those who've been so beaten down by life that they dont give a fukk anymore. Let's tell them to pull their pants up and act right. That'll solve their problems.

This man is still operating off the white perspective of racism that frames it as an interpersonal rather than a systemic issue that hurts everyone. I have respect for all that hes done with his work donating to black universities, charities, etc. But hes not a moral authority and he needs to chill on telling black people how to act.
Even if hes totally innocent of sexual assault, he still admitted to doing these drugs and getting drunk with these white women while hes supposed to be out here telling us how important the black family and clean living is?

His speech was tone deaf, but it wasn't c00ning. People need to be able to discern the 2 because you will potentially alienate an ally because you simply couldn't have a grownup conversation.

Can you briefly elaborate on this. I see people in here referring to Bill as a c00n or a sellout for telling black people to tighten up whilst ignoring white supremacy. Do people really think Bill calling out white supremacy would change anything?
Wouldn’t it be more impactful to tell your people first to clean themselves up starting with how we treat and refer to one another? All my life, I’ve seen Bill put on for black people. From his early films to Fat Albert to the Cosby show and beyond.
Seeing this man serve time in an institution is a tragedy but it’s also a testament to his moral character that he is still doing well and in great spirits. Keep strong Bill.

The speech, with both its insights and problems, was to a Black audience too. He speaks in front of Whites a lot and if he wanted to c00n he would have been doing it.

He didn't. I caught that but should have worded it better. He said that speech wasn't for all Black Americans. Which I agree with. The speech was aimed at younger black people and the hood BUT it was at an award ceremony for the NAACP. None of the people he was talking about were in that building. That audience was made up of upper middle class and rich black people and some "Liberal" whites. Had he pulled up on the block in Philly and gave the same speech I would've respected that. But all he was doing was preaching to the choir instead that room was filled with a whole bunch of people who look down on the average black person anyway so that speech wasn't helping at all fam. Me being a 19 year old college student with a job was definitely not feeling the identity politics that were being spewed as the solution to all my problems and the key to a prosperous life.
