Porter will be mercilessly ripped if he tries to portray Baldwin as some flamboyant gay black man when he absolutely wasn't. He can earn himself some respect if he does the role justice.

Lol James Baldwin walked so people like Billy Porter can run. He is a great literary and orator and I know people don't like Billy Porter but he was great in Pose and is a serious actor. I'm sure he will treat the role with the respect and dignity it deserves.

Baldwin was gay but he was only a little flamboyant, like you could tell he had a lil sugar in his tank but his identity wasnt gay, he was just a man who happened to be gay. Billy porter has so much sugar in his tank that car will never run again

Even though Baldwin was gay too, Porter is just gonna be too much. It'll be very difficult for him to convey Baldwin without coming across as camp.
