Birds have hollow bones so they fall slower. It's still hurt, but it doesn't die because he didn't fall that drastically. Gravity didn't put in as much work as it would if it was a grown bird or mammal.
Everything falls at the same rate of acceleration. 9.8 meters per second squared. Hollow bones make it lighter and therefore flight is more efficient.

Yes, wind resistance and his spread allowed him to reach terminal velocity meaning that acceleration due to gravity is being negatted.
