Listening to it now it sounds like he's trying to recall what he originally wrote/said on the fly, cause while some of it lines up some of it don't.

I initially thought the same as you. However, Crossroads is their biggest song and he's probably performed it an average of 50+ times a year since it was released. It would seem unlikely that he'd forget the lyrics...Unless he "mumbled" through the original recording and is trying make words fit after the fact. I wouldn't doubt that either.
