People keep asking this and I don't know why it hasn't been explained since it's common sense.

Going for 2 down 8 or 9 points gives the coaching staff an opportunity to plot out the rest of the game, whether they'll need 1 or 2 possessions to tie the game. You're going to have to go for two eventually; it's better to do it with more time on the clock.

It's a matter of optionality. Fans hate it because it kinda kills hope if they miss the two point conversation but the math makes it make sense.
