BILLIONAIRE ROBERT F. SMITH GIVES $50 MILLION TO CORNELL ENGINEERING SCHOOL.

Largest Donation to a Engineering School by an African American.

Robert F. Smith, the founder, chairman and CEO of Vista Equity Partners, made a $50 million commitment to Cornell University’s School Of Engineering, his alma mater.

His gift is being reciprocated. The school will be renamed the Robert Frederick Smith School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering at Cornell. The donation will also fund the Robert Frederick Smith Tech Scholars Program. The program will focus on providing financial aid, particularly for minority and female students.

“Robert’s generosity will not only elevate our School of Chemical and Biomolecular Engineering, but it will ensure it becomes more accessible than ever,” said Lance Collins, the Joseph Silbert Dean of Cornell Engineering. “I believe an affordable educational path from engineering in Ithaca to Cornell Tech in New York City, for those who wouldn’t otherwise be offered such an opportunity, will produce some of the sharpest minds in engineering and technology. I’m thankful Robert shares this vision and is making it a reality.”

Smith, who is No. 1 on the BE100s Private Equity list, was also recently listed on the Forbes 400—the magazine’s yearly list of the 400 richest Americans. He is the only African American male on the list. Under his leadership, Vista Equity Partners has become one of the world’s most successful investment houses. He received a degree in chemical engineering from Cornell in 1985.

“I have had the privilege of being a Cornell graduate with a degree in engineering,” said Smith. “I credit much to my career success to being an engineer by training. Engineers solve problems and fix things. Along my career, I have become increasingly concerned by the lack of diversity across the engineering and tech disciplines. My direct intention here is to work directly with Cornell Tech and Cornell Engineering, in New York City and in Ithaca, to create direct on-ramps for African-Americans and young women to enter tech so that they can help lead us into the fourth industrial revolution.”

Why not donate to Florida A&M University School of Engineering :mjpls:

Two reasons

1) He did a interview with Black enterprise magazine in 2012 about HBCU's. He made it clear it's not something he believes in.

2) He did go to Cornell University, so obviously he has emotional connections to the University.:manny:

To be fair his brother Allan smith has donated some money to HBCU's.

I understand that but this is why I kinda lose hope..these new blacks believe in the doctrine of no labels..I'm not in the business of telling people how to spend there money but other ethnic groups in this country give back to strengthen there own institutions..even though I hate Donald Sterling, he was right when he said jews lend to each other at 0 percent interest and build credit unions in there own neighborhoods..rich black folk aren't interested in that type of giving..FAMU school of engineering graduates hundreds of black and brown students every year and could use 50 million for improvements and to eventually break away drom FSU..how many black and brown students graduate each year from Cornell school of engineering or from that school period? shyts backwards breh

It's his money and he can do what he wants but it blows my mind him donating to an Ivy that already gets a ton of money and not to an HBCU and 50 mill is more money than most have in endowment, but at the end of the day he can do what he wants I guess.

Don't you think donating $50M to FL A&M Engineering College is kind of a waste though? The best black engineering students in FL go to UF or Embrey Riddle or Florida Polytech anyway. $50M would improve the facilities but would it really improve the school's rep to the point where it's going to attract better students and improve the output of students?

How can you create a world class HBCU when we constantly give excuses as to why not to support them?

I don't think creating a "world-class" HBCU is necessary. Even if it was, I don't think it's a goal that can just have money thrown at it.

Just say you dont see purpose for HBCUs anymore lol. The point of a university is to create a system where students can compete at a global level.

The best black engineering students do not go to UF because it is not a welcoming environment for black students... I know because I had family in the program..they go to the joint FSU/FAMU program..FSU is trying to starts it's own engineering school separate from FAMU so a 50 million donation to FAMU school of engineering will do wonders to ensure it is competitive with UF and Embry riddle and eventually FSU when it gets approval to build a seperate school

NCA&T is another top Engineering school. Dudes dont realize that LArget PWIs get INSANE amounts of donations ON TOP of making billions from Athletics (those who compete in D1 Football & Hoops), mean while HBCUs get a little bit of money from federal grants but for the most part their money comes from tuition, the small alumni bases and the few corporations that need a tax write off giving some money.

Okay I'm on break now. But I did feel that this would turn into a HBCU funding debate that's why I highlighted the bottom part of that article. This program is used to help Black people enroll and go to CORNELL UNIVERSITY. This is Cornell University brehs. This man donated money to his alma mater which he has openly talked about as his best time in life. I don't know to much about FAMU personally to make an opinion on the university; but if this opens up a chance for black people to go to the Ivy League, it should be celebrated.

There's a difference from what Dr.Dre did. That was c00nish to the extreme.
